The announcement of a 4 day weekend in 2022 has been well received by the British public, but when is it and what are we celebrating?

In June 2021 it was announced that the UK will celebrate an extra bank holiday for the Queen’s platinum jubilee which marks 70 years on the throne for Queen Elizabeth. The 2022 break starts on Thursday 2 June and ends on Sunday 5 June with the UK being able to celebrate this historic event in style with a 4 day weekend.

The additional bank holiday is on Thursday 2 June 2022 with the usual Spring Bank Holiday (or late May bank holiday) moving to Friday 3 June 2022. This means that both of these days will be bank holidays where several UK businesses will be closed to mark this once in a lifetime occasion.

What is the platinum jubilee and why is it so important?

The Queen’s platinum jubilee in 2022 celebrates Queen Elizabeth being the first-ever monarch to celebrate 70 years on the throne. This historic occasion will be marked throughout 2022 with many national events, including a concert at Buckingham Palace. The Queen herself, and other members of the royal family will be carrying out engagements throughout the weekend including travelling all around the UK.

It has also been reported that the Queen will be attending a day at Epsom Downs races and a service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s cathedral. To ensure celebrations can be carried out throughout the country, beacons will be lit throughout the UK, Isle of Man and UK overseas territories which is “a tradition used to celebrate royal jubilees, weddings and coronations”.

Will your work be closed during the 2022 bank holiday?

Traditionally, during UK bank holidays the vast majority of offices tend to close with many other businesses operating reduced hours if necessary. With this in mind, the extra UK bank holiday could mean that if employees request just 3 days off, they could get a total of 9 days off in a row (including weekends), giving them the perfect opportunity to rest, recharge and enjoy the celebrations.
